Fallen from Olympian Heights

I used to think the Bible has a rather harsh way of describing people at times e.g. a dog returning to its own vomit. But after hearing the disturbing news today, I'm truly enlightened and come to the understanding of how apt these descriptions fit one who has fallen so very far from grace...to the point of no return.
How can this be? From someone who knew God initimately..who was once so close to Him..who had heard His voice..how could one forget all the goodness that was bestowed upon him..and turn right back around to a life even worse than ever before? But I guess this is nothing new..the Bible tells stories of how one king after another..how one generation after another..betrayed the God who loved them and saved them from their misery time after time.
Is there hope then? Contrasting Peter's and Judas' response..both denied Christ...but one repented and left behind a legacy of great works for God..but the other hung himself..end of story. So, it's a choice we make each time we come to the cross roads of life..do right or wrong?..please God of self? But I believe if we do set our hearts on 'things above'..God can ultimately make right even the most wrong decisions or difficult situations.
Daily prayer: Lord, never let me wander too far from the path You have chosen for me.. as my sense of direction is very poor..as You (and many others) well know! Amen..
